“The Monster at the End of this Book” commentary
I haven’t done this before; written my own commentary. Ok, it’s more like I’ve never posted it up on the internet before, especially in a timely fashion. I have been writing pop culture notes for my own amusement for a long time.
Um, wow. <3 <3 <3 This series really does love its fans, to the point where I’m thinking, “Mutual admiration society.” I’m going to die of combined happiness, squee, and just laughing my head off. When they do that within the first ten minuets of the show… yeah. Mmm, of course you’d say “Sam slash Dean.” Sam. Mhhum.
And Dean, seriously, with all the Steven King, you didn’t read Dark Tower and know that letting the author die is a very bad idea?
And, um, yeah. “You should have seen Luke.” I was probably the only person who got a big kick out of that… I love the little Biblical things. Houses of the Holy cemented and increased my love for this show with its Biblical accuracy. Although at this point I’m reminded more of Jeremiah, called the weeping prophet for all of you who didn’t grow up locked in a Sunday School classroom.
Oh, and Castiel, I think you’re growing a sense of humor. I somehow actually like the character a little now, when I’ve been baffled from the beginning of the season as to why people were so in love with Castiel. I’m still a little baffled, but at least I’m developing a bit of appreciation of my own.
As for the trailer, I have this to say; these are going to go down as the-write-your-own-episode episodes or the fanfiction episodes. Seriously.
On the other hand, they did say they were running out of ideas for how to tread water for the rest of this season. I guess they could have come up with much worse things to do than give the fans everything they wanted. But still, this is… I’m torn between using derogatory terms and expressions of sheer amazement and happiness or possibly going into throes of academic gobbledygook about self-referentialism and transformative narratives being reabsorbed and stuff. Even the most negative interpretation I’m inclined to take is that hey, they’re only ‘borrowing’ back what was ‘borrowed’ from them, so all’s fair.
On a more personal note, that backed up one of my fics. An aspect of the fic that I had thought was completely ridiculous and self-censored to a degree. I actually had been tempted to go whole hog with “The Legend Grows” and make it Winchester-based religion, but I just barely restrained myself and only hinted at it (ok, so I wasn’t quite as uninhibited as I’d set out to be. I was more than I would have, ‘k?) Mmm, the special pleasures of this fandom.
I have rational things to say, like about Lilith showing her hand and the importance of plurals, but I’ll need a day or two to develop them. I was a little distracted by all the fan-gifts.
